How does solar work?

Solar power is one of the smartest investments you can make for your home — and it all starts with harnessing the free, abundant energy shining down on us every day. Modern solar panels capture sunlight and instantly turn it into clean electricity you can use to power your home, slash your energy bills, and take control of rising power costs. With clever tech working behind the scenes, your system converts sunshine into usable power, stores it in a battery if you have one, and even sends extra energy back to the grid. It’s efficient, reliable, and a game-changer for long-term savings.

1. Capturing Sunlight
Solar panels are made up of many small units called solar cells, usually made from silicon. These cells absorb sunlight and convert it into an electrical current through the photovoltaic effect.
2. Generating Electricity
When sunlight hits the solar cells:
Photons (light particles) knock electrons loose inside the silicon.
This movement of electrons creates a flow of direct current (DC) electricity.
3. Converting to Usable Power
Most homes and businesses use alternating current (AC), not DC.
So, the solar system uses a device called an inverter to convert DC into AC power.
4. Powering Your Home
The converted AC electricity is then used to:
Run your appliances and lighting.
Charge home batteries (if installed).
Send any excess electricity back into the power grid (if you’re connected).
5. Storing and Sharing Power
If you have a battery, extra power generated during the day is stored and can be used at night or on cloudy days.
If you’re connected to the grid, extra power can be exported, often giving you credits (a system called net metering).

Inverters convert DC to AC
The power either runs your home, charges a battery, or feeds into the grid

DMAK recently serviced my heat pumps. They arrived promptly and did a great job. They identified a fault, fixed it promptly and both are now running better than ever. I wouldn’t hesitate to call them again.
